Prof. Muriel Meiring

Muriel Meiring is a Full Professor and Principal Scientist in the Department of Haematology and Cell Biology at the National Health Laboratory Service and University of the Free State at Bloemfontein, South Africa. Prof Meiring established the Specialised Haemostasis Laboratory at the University of the Free State as a reference centre for von Willebrand Disease (VWD) in South Africa. This SANAS-accredited laboratory also enjoys international recognition as a reference laboratory. She also collaborates with laboratories in Belgium, Hungary, and Australia, not only on research regarding VWD, but also on the development of antithrombotic agents and diagnostic kits and microparticle contributions to haemostatic disorders. She is the inventor of 3 South African patents and 2 provisional international patents and filed a South African patent. She is also the author of more than 45 peer-reviewed publications. She furthermore chairs the Research and Development Committee of the NHLS of South Africa, and besides her PhD and MBA degrees, she obtained her D Med Sc degree. She acted as the Head of the University of the Free State School of Pathology in 2023 and 2024.

Prof. Sandeep Vasaikar

Professor Sandeep Vasaikar is Professor of Medical Microbiology in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Walter Sisulu University. He has been working as a head of the division of Med Micro since 2004 in the Department of laboratory Medicine & Pathology, Walter Sisulu University. He studied MBBS at GMC, received his MD in Med Micro at LTMMC, Mumbai and received his PhD from WSU in 2016. His research interest is Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and AMR in rural area. He has published 35 peer reviewd paublications and has received VC’s Research award for high achievement in research in 2019. Teaching, both undergraduate medical and postgraduate students at WSU by Problem-Based Learning and Community-Based Education, has also been an abiding interest.

Dr. Clinton Moodley

Dr Clinton Moodley qualified with a PhD in Molecular and Cell biology, as well as an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Cape Town. His current role is as a Senior Medical Scientist and researcher at UCT and the NHLS Groote Schuur Hospital, where his research and clinical interests are focused on the molecular identification, characterization, and typing of multidrug resistant bacteria. He is a primary investigator describing resistomes in drug resistant bacteria, using NGS applications, as well as characterising microbiomes using shotgun metagenomic techniques. He is also focused on epidemiological investigations of nosocomial outbreaks of resistant organisms using WGS and other typing tools, and the design and validation of novel molecular diagnostics.

Dr. Jitcy Saji Joseph

Dr. Jitcy Saji Joseph is a Senior Medical Scientist, currently serving as an Acting Head of the Toxicology and Biochemistry Section at the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) in South Africa. Dr. Joseph is a certified Professional Natural Scientist, accredited by the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions. She earned her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Johannesburg in 2016, with her research spanning drug discovery, toxicology, molecular biology, cell biology, metabolism, and analytical biochemistry. Before her current leadership role, Dr. Joseph completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of South Africa (UNISA), where she explored anti-cancer drug discovery and guided postgraduate students, and at North-West University (Potchefstroom), where she investigated biomarkers for HIV and cardiovascular disease. Her industry experience includes roles as a QC documentation auditor and lab analyst at Pharma Q Ltd. Dr. Joseph authored numerous articles in international peer-reviewed journals and presented her findings at various national conferences.
