Dr. Shaida Khan is a Chemical Pathologist, NHLS Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital | Joint Staff, University of the Witwatersrand Dr Shaida Khan is a Chemical Pathologist based at the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, and serves as joint academic staff in the School of Pathology, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her professional interests lie in laboratory automation, leveraging technology to enhance laboratory quality, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize laboratory workflows and performance. Dr Khan has completed several certified online courses in AI, and is currently pursuing specializations in Generative AI, AI in Education, and AI Analytics, with a particular focus on their application in healthcare and education. She has delivered talks on AI-related topics across both NHLS and University platforms. Her ongoing work focuses on embedding AI into laboratory processes to improve key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational efficiency. Dr Khan also serves on the University’s Faculty of Health Sciences undergraduate committees for pathology education and educational technologies. She is actively involved in initiatives aimed at integrating AI into higher education

Helene Kruger

Helene Kruger obtained a B.Sc. Health Sciences: Biochemistry and Physiology (Cum Laude) from the North-West University in 2007 and a B.Sc. Hons with specialisation in Chemical Pathology from the University of Pretoria in 2008. In 2022 she obtained a certification in Advanced Health Management (Cum Laude) form the Foundation of Professional Development (FDP)/Yale. She has accumulated seventeen years’ experience as a scientist performing chemical analysis, of which the past nine years have been at the Ampath National Reference Laboratory (“NRL”). The last seven years of service has been as the Scientist in Charge of the Specialised Chemistry Department. Successful method development and validation, utilising the following analytical methodologies has been demonstrated: GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, HPLC-PDA/FLD, LC-MS/MS and ICP-MS. Helene’s ultimate passion is utilizing her analytical skills to contribute to the general health & prosperity of society. It is the utmost gift to love one’s job and make a difference performing it.

Zain Warasally

Zain Warasally is a medical scientist based at the Department of Chemical Pathology, NHLS Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. He is trained in disease identification using various chromatography and molecular techniques. His additional interests involve optimizing and monitoring information technology software in routine chemistry applications.

Dr. Sean Currin

Dr. Sean Currin is a Chemical Pathologist with the NHLS and the University of the Witwatersrand, currently working at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital. He oversees mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography testing within the department; he is also an advisor to the Forensic Chemistry Laboratories at a national level. Dr Currin is the co-Director of the Wits Mass Spectrometry and Drug Monitoring Initiative which focusses on these key research areas. He is a member of the analytical committee of the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology and the CPQA working group for the analysis of TB drugs and metabolites.

Dr. Ashlin Rampul

Dr Ashlin Rampul is currently a qualified chemical pathologist who works in the department of chemical pathology University of Pretoria and the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS). He has interests in endocrinology, laboratory management, nephrology and laboratory assay designs. He is the first South African who represents Africa in the International federation of clinical chemistry (IFCC) young scientists task force as a core member. He has won awards for research in 3 international conferences as a clinical chemist. He has initiated webinars in clinical chemistry for young scientists all over Africa promoting interest in clinical chemistry. Currently he is a Chemical Pathologist for PathCare a private lab in South Africa since September 2021- present. Dr Rampul was awarded health care mentor of the year in 2024 and he was awarded one of the top 30 influential men in 2025

Dr. Thumeka Jalavu

Dr. Thumeka Jalavu is a consultant Chemical Pathologist at the National Health Laboratory Service and University of Stellenbosch, at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town. After completing her undergraduate MBChB in 2009, internship and community service in 2012, she worked as a Medical Officer for eighteen months in the department of Medicine at Livingstone Hospital, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. She graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with an MMed in Chemical Pathology in 2019 after receiving her FCPath (SA) Chem in the same year from the colleges of medicine of South Africa (CMSA). Her main research interests are in Evidence based laboratory medicine, Multiple Myeloma, pre-analytical phase, chronic kidney disease, Biological Variation and Point of Care testing. She is the deputy chair of the NHLS Chemistry Expert Committee (CEC) and chair of the Chemistry Technology assessment subcommittee of the CEC, chair of the Stellenbosch Chemical Pathology Post Graduate Committee, and a member of the Tygerberg/Groote Schuur Department of Pathology Audit committee. She is involved in teaching of undergraduate medical students and training of registrars and intern scientist within the Tygerberg Division.

Dr. Reinhardt Hesse

Dr. Reinhardt Hess completed his MBChB at the University of Pretoria in 2014, followed by internship and community service at Rob Ferreira Hospital. After qualifying as a Chemical Pathologist in 2021 through the NHLS and the University of the Witwatersrand, he joined PathCare in 2022. Based in Somerset West, he oversees chemical pathology operations for PathCare in the Boland and Overberg region and serves on the Steering Committee for IT. His interests include lipidology and cardiovascular risk reduction, laboratory informatics and data analytics, and LCMS-based testing.
