Dr. Mpho Makwela- Rakgoale

Dr Mpho Makwela- Rakgoale is an Occupational Medicine Specialist currently working at the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH) as the Centre Head of Occupational Medicine, responsible for the Occupational Medical Centre and Ergonomics Unit. She has been a medical practitioner for 20 years and an Occupational Medical Specialist for 13 years with Fellowship in Public Health- Occupational Medicine and Mmed Environmental Health at the University of Kwa Zulu Natal. Previous roles: Head of Health at BMW Group South Africa and vast experience in setting up health services in the Automotive, Steel and Manufacturing Industry. Experience in the Transportation/ logistic Industry as she held the Position of Project Lead/ Medical Advisor for PrimeCure/ Transnet Freight Rail. Gathered further experience in the Construction industry, working as the Medical Advisor for EOH/ Murray and Robert. Experience in the mining and compensation system of miners and ex-mine workers as the previous Director of Medical Bureau of Occupational Disease

Prof. Theresa Roussouw

Professor Rossouw is the interim HoD of Immunology at UP. She earned her MBChB and two master's degrees in Philosophy and Public Health with distinction, and holds doctoral degrees in Philosophy and Medical Immunology. After working as an HIV clinician for 12 years, she shifted to research. Leading the Immunopathology Laboratory within UP's Department of Immunology, she focuses on HIV-related drug resistance, systemic immune activation, and the effects of COVID-19 on individuals with immunodeficiency. She is involved in several scientific committees, is the President of SAIS, Treasurer for FAIS, and chairperson of the REC at the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Prof. Spo Kgalamono

Prof.Kgalamono is the Executive Director of the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service in South Africa. She is a Specialist in Occupational Medicine with extensive experience in occupational and environmental health, spanning clinical practice, research, policy, and training. In her leadership role at the NIOH, she oversees national programmes in occupational medicine, epidemiology, toxicology, pathology, and workplace health and safety. She has played a key role in advancing evidence-based practice, promoting worker health protection, and supporting the integration of occupational health into broader public health strategies. Professor Kgalamono is also deeply engaged in education and training, contributing to curriculum development and postgraduate supervision to strengthen capacity in occupational health and related fields. She has presented and published widely, with work addressing occupational diseases, workplace exposures, and health risks across both the formal and informal economy. She serves on national and international committees, providing expert advice to government, labour, and industry, and collaborates with global partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Her career reflects a commitment to improving the health and safety of workers as a foundation for sustainable development and resilient workforces.

Dr. Kerrigan McCarthy

Dr. Kerrigan McCarthy is a pathologist with a joint appointment at Wits, Department of Virology, School of Pathology, Faculty of Health Sciences. She has over 25 years of experience in surveillance and programmatic service delivery in communicable diseases, including tuberculosis, HIV, cryptococcosis, measles, rubella, polio and outbreak investigation and response. Her current area of interest is the application of wastewater and environmental surveillance for communicable disease

Prof. Penny Moore

Dr Penny Moore is the South African Research Chair of Virus-Host Dynamics and Research Professor at Wits University and NICD. She is Director of the Antibody Immunity Research Unit, an extramural unit of the SAMRC and a Research Fellow at the Infectious Diseases and Oncology Research Institute. She also holds a joint appointment as Honorary Senior Scientist in Virus-Host Dynamics at CAPRISA, UKZN. Penny directs a research group who work in the fields of HIV and SARS-CoV-2 vaccine discovery, combining Virology, Immunology and Bioinformatics. More recently, the team has expanded to work on Influenza, Cytomegalovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Adenoviruses and Ebola.

Dr. Caroline Maluleka

Dr. Caroline Maluleka is a senior pathologist at the Centre for Healthcare Associated Infections, Antimicrobial resistance and Mycoses (CHARM) South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable diseases (NICD) and a joined staff member for the University of Witwatersrand and University of Pretoria responsible for conducting consultative support, lecturing and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Dr Maluleka has worked as a clinical microbiologist in the public-sector for over 10 years. Her current work focuses on infectious diseases, epidemiology, healthcare associated infections and AMR, with a particular interest in mycoses. Co-authored a number of peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Homie Razavi

Dr. Homie Razavi is the Managing Director and founder of the CDA Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to hepatitis elimination. He is also a fellow in the Society of Decision Professionals and has 25 years of decision analysis experience. In the last 10 years, he has focused his efforts on supporting public health decisions related to viral hepatitis elimination. He and his team collaborate with over 100 countries globally to develop and implement national programs. In addition, he started the Polaris Observatory which has become the gold standard in global and country-level HBV and HCV burden estimates.

Dr. Jeremy Nel

Dr. Jeremy Nel is a physician and infectious diseases specialist, and the head of infectious diseases at Helen Joseph Hospital and the University of the Witwatersrand. He completed a transplant infectious diseases fellowship at the University of North Carolina, is past president of the Infectious Diseases Society of South Africa, and is an active member of the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society. He has published research in the fields of HIV, tuberculosis, nontuberculous mycobacteria, COVID and cryptococcal meningitis, and lead or participated in clinical trials in COVID-19, cryptococcal meningitis, and pneumonia therapeutics.

Dr. Emily Prendergast

Dr Emily Prendergast is a doctor and research clinician from the UK whose work spans multiple disciplines (infectious diseases, global health, community engagement, anthropology). Emily undertook an undergraduate degree in Human Social and Political Sciences and a subsequent postgraduate degree in Medicine at the University of Cambridge, followed by internships and clinical fellowships at St Thomas’ and St George’s Hospitals in London. Here, she acquired an interest in HIV-related cryptococcal disease, leading to qualitative research and community engagement work in Johannesburg. Emily is the Lead Clinician of ADVANCE GERMS-SA, investigating severe infections in people with advanced HIV disease in South Africa.

Dr. Kimberly Koporc

Dr. Kimberly Koporc (pronounced Kah-ports) is a Senior Technical Advisor working for the CDC Foundation and serves as the Public Health Bulletin Project Manager for the Bloomberg Philanthropies Data for Health Initiative’s Data Impact Program. She collaborates with ministries of health and national public health institutes to develop and strengthen public health bulletins to disseminate data to inform policy and program implementation. Previously, Dr. Koporc worked for several years in the field of neglected tropical diseases. Her career in public health started as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana. Dr. Koporc holds a Doctor of Science and a Master of Public Health from Tulane University and a Master of Business from Emory University.
