Prof.Muriel Meiring

Muriel Meiring is a Full Professor and Principal Scientist in the Department of Haematology and Cell Biology at the National Health Laboratory Service and University of the Free State at Bloemfontein, South Africa. Prof Meiring established the Specialised Haemostasis Laboratory at the University of the Free State as a reference centre for von Willebrand Disease (VWD) in South Africa. This SANAS-accredited laboratory also enjoys international recognition as a reference laboratory. She also collaborates with laboratories in Belgium, Hungary, and Australia, not only on research regarding VWD, but also on the development of antithrombotic agents and diagnostic kits and microparticle contributions to haemostatic disorders. She is the inventor of 3 South African patents and 2 provisional international patents and filed a South African patent. She is also the author of more than 45 peer-reviewed publications. She furthermore chairs the Research and Development Committee of the NHLS of South Africa, and besides her PhD and MBA degrees, she obtained her D Med Sc degree. She acted as the Head of the University of the Free State School of Pathology in 2023 and 2024.

Dr. Ravnit Grewa

Dr. Ravnit Grewal serves as the only Principal Haematopathologist in the Eastern Cape, overseeing public diagnostic services, supporting professional development, and contributing to provincial health policy discussions in haematology. With over 15 years of experience across service, research, and education, she is known for her contributions to HIV-associated lymphomas, biobanking, and teaching the next generation of pathologists, scientists and technologists. Her work spans laboratory leadership, clinical collaboration, postgraduate education, and health policy input. In recent years, her focus has expanded to include public pathology service reform, inspired by her current role overseeing diagnostic services in a resource-constrained province. Dr. Grewal is passionate about strengthening diagnostic equity and reimagining what precision medicine can look like in African settings.

Dr. Clinton Moodley

Dr Clinton Moodley qualified with a PhD in Molecular and Cell biology, as well as an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Cape Town. His current role is as a Senior Medical Scientist and researcher at UCT and the NHLS Groote Schuur Hospital, where his research and clinical interests are focused on the molecular identification, characterization, and typing of multidrug resistant bacteria. He is a primary investigator describing resistomes in drug resistant bacteria, using NGS applications, as well as characterising microbiomes using shotgun metagenomic techniques. He is also focused on epidemiological investigations of nosocomial outbreaks of resistant organisms using WGS and other typing tools, and the design and validation of novel molecular diagnostics.

Prof. Mae Newton-Foot

Prof. Mae Newton-Foot Foot is the medical scientist in the Division of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, NHLS Tygerberg and Stellenbosch University, where she performs molecular diagnostics and have been involved in the validation of several diagnostic assays. She is also a member and former chair of the NHLS Microbiology Technology Assessment Committee, and a member of the HPCSA Committee for Medical Science. Her research includes the investigation of bacterial epidemiology, antibiotic resistance and virulence in hospital, community and environmental settings; and the use of molecular and next generation sequencing methods as diagnostic and surveillance tools in clinical and environmental settings. She currently supervises 2 postdocs, 3 PhD, 2 MSc, 4 BSc honours, and one MMed student.
