Mr. Jaco Oosthuizen

Mr. Jaco Oosthuizen is a technical scientist who enjoys troubleshooting and understanding how things work. His tertiary training started with a BSc in Biochemistry, whereafter he obtained a BScHons in Conservation Genetics, MMedSc in Human Genetics and currently registered for a PhD in Human Genetics. He is employed at the NHLS in Bloemfontein, where his profession as a Medical Scientist entails the genetic diagnosis of breast cancer and developmental delay. He currently serves as vice-chair for the Science Programmes Committee for the School of Pathology at the University of the Free State, deputy chair for the committee of Medical Science in Human Genetics (MSHG) of the Southern African Society of Human Genetics (SASHG) and an ordinary member in the portfolio for genetics of the Committee of Medical Science (CMS) of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Dr. Maria Mudau

Dr Maria Mudau is joint staff in the Division of Human Genetics, National Health Laboratory service and School of Pathology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She is currently a Principal Medical Scientist, Lecturer and Researcher. Dr Mudau’s area of specialisation is in Sequence variant classification and interpretation. Her Research Interests include RASopathies, Inherited congenital cardiac defects, Molecular diagnostics of various monogenic disorders using NGS. Dr Mudau’s current research involves Utilising advanced genomic technologies to determine genetic bases of congenital cardiac defects.

Fahmida Essop

Fahmida Essop manages the Gene-Based Diagnostic Service at the NHLS, Division of Human Genetics, Johannesburg/Wits. With over 20 years of experience in the field, she is primarily responsible for overseeing the routine diagnostic service section. In addition to managing day-to-day operations, she coordinates multiple research and development projects within the Division. Her research interests lie in the development and implementation of molecular diagnostic assays for inherited disorders, with a focus on translating genomic technologies into routine clinical practice. Furthermore, she also coordinates the HPCSA-accredited Medical Scientist internship training program, playing a key role in developing future professionals in the field.

Dr. Daisy Salome Mokwele

MBBCh (Wits) DTMH (Wits) FCPaed (SA) Dip HIV Man (SA) FCMG (SA) MMed Medical Genetics Daisy Mokwele is Clinical Geneticist based at the Division of Human Genetics, School of Pathology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and the National Health Laboratory Service. Her interests are in cardiogenetics/genomics, prenatal genetics, paediatric genetics and inborn errors of metabolism. She has worked as a General Paediatrician in paediatrics and neonatology, both in the public and private sector. Her preoccupation is in contributing to the work of bringing medical genetics to its rightful place in day-to-day patient care (that so many in the field are busy with), especially in paediatrics and child health. This also applies to the inclusion of African data in genomic research to inform management of our diverse population. She is passionate about lifelong learning, teaching and shaping the next generation health practitioner to serve our community. She is hoping for a future where access to health care doesn’t depend on one’s geographical location or socioeconomic status.

Barry Shingwenyana

Barry Shingwenyana (he/him) is a registered genetic counsellor currently employed as a clinical genetic counsellor and lecturer in the Division of Human Genetics, the University of the Witwatersrand and the National Health Laboratory Service. He completed his BSc in Medical Science (cum laude) at the University of Limpopo in 2017. In 2018 he joined the University of the Witwatersrand for his Master of Medicine in Genetic Counselling which he completed in 2020. Upon qualifying in 2021, he worked as research genetic counsellor within the Division before occupying his current role, January of 2023. Barry is very passionate about raising awareness of genetic counselling in South Africa. His areas of interest are cultural competency within the field of genetic counselling, prenatal genetic counselling and he enjoys patient-centred research.

Malebo Malope

Malebo is a registered genetic counsellor and currently employed at Stellenbosch University as a lecturer. She is responsible for coordinating the teaching activities for the Clinical Genetics and Genetic Counselling Unit. Additionally, she develops and leads short courses within the unit. Malebo provides clinical genetic counselling in Tygerberg Hospital and participates clinical training to intern genetic counsellors.Completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Limpopo and obtained her master's degree in Genetic Counselling at the University of Cape Town. She has a special interest in decision-making on termination of pregnancy for foetal abnormalities, accessible genetic counselling services and diversity and inclusion within the field of genetics and genomics.

Dr. Nicole van der Merwe

Dr Nicole van der Merwe is a medical scientist and registered genetic counsellor who works as a counselling and research consultant across the public and private sectors. She is the Founder of FamGen Counselling, a telegenetics service designed to meet local needs in genomic counselling and health professional education. She currently contributes to a SAMRC-funded precision medicine project focused on integrating point-of-care technology with whole exome and genome sequencing (WES/WGS) into clinical practice. She earned her PhD in Pathology from Stellenbosch University in 2016, with research exploring familial, co-morbidity, and therapy-induced risk in breast cancer. She later completed a MSc (Med) in Genetic Counselling at the University of Cape Town, with research examining stakeholder views on the return of individual genetic research results and incidental findings. Her key interests include responsible return of genomic findings, community engagement, and public education to advance the ethical implementation of genomic medicine in healthcare..
