Dr. Victor Mabasa

Dr. Mabasa holds a PhD in Medical Virology from the University of Pretoria and serves as a Senior Medical Scientist at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) within the Wastewater Genomics Syndicate, specialising in viral enrichment and assay development for wastewater-based pathogen detection. Committed to building research capacity and collaboration across Africa, he chairs WESCoPA (Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance Community of Practice for Africa), driving continental wastewater and environmental surveillance initiatives. Dr. Mabasa consults for Africa CDC, recently contributing to the 'Consultative Meeting to Accelerate Molecular-Based Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance for Mpox Outbreak Response in Africa' and the 'Development of the African Continental Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance Strategy'.

Dr. Lucia Hans

I am a pathologist supporting the National HIV Viral Load and Early Infant Diagnosis Programme, managed under the National Priority Program (NPP). My role within the NPP involves providing expert input into national tenders for HIV molecular assays, conducting national validations of new assays, and addressing queries related to the quality management of these diagnostic tools. I view my contribution as pivotal in ensuring that every step of the pathology value chain—from sample collection to result release and clinical utilisation—is executed to the highest standards, thereby enabling optimal patient care. I bring extensive experience from managing the HIV Molecular Laboratory within the Department of Molecular Medicine and Haematology at NHLS Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and the University of the Witwatersrand. My responsibilities have included: oversight of diagnostic testing operations; teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and conducting research in molecular diagnostics. As a Principal Investigator for WHO HIV molecular pre-qualification evaluations, I lead assessments in a WHO-accredited laboratory. I have conducted multiple evaluations of HIV molecular assays, both independently and in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). My current interests include identifying use cases for HIV molecular point-of-care (POC) testing in high-burden settings, leading large-scale HPV testing implementation as the NHLS VEC representative and piloting HIV molecular POC testing in labour ward settings
